إن اللسان من نعم الله العظيمة ولطائف صنعه الغريبة. فإنه صغير جرمه، عظيم طاعته، إذ لا يستبين الكفر والإيمان إلا بشهادة اللسان. ثم إنه ما من متخيل أو معلوم مظنون أو موهوم إلا واللسان يتناوله أو يتعرض له بإثبات أو نفي، فإن كل ما هو متناول العلم يعرب عنه اللسان إما بحق أو باطل. وهذه خاصية لا توجد في سائر الأعضاء.
واللسان رحب الميدان ليس له مرد ولا لمجاله منتهى ولا حد. ففي الخير له مجال رحب وفي الشر له مجرى سحب، فمن أطلق لسانه، وأرخى له العنان وأهمله، سلك به الشيطان في ميدان، وساقه إلى شفا جرف هار.
ولا نجاة من شر اللسان إلا عندما يقيد بلجام الشرع، فلا يطلقه الإنسان إلا فيما ينفعه في الدنيا والآخرة، ويكف عن كل ما يخشى غائلته في عاجله وآجله.
وإن علم ما يحمد إطلاق اللسان فيه أو يذم غامض عزيز، والعمل بمقتضاه ثقيل عسير.فإن أعصى الأعضاء على الإنسان اللسان، إذ لا تعب في تحريكه ولا مؤونة في إطلاقه. وقد يتساهل الخلق في الاحتراز عن آفاته وغوائله والحذر من مصائده وحبائله. فاللسان للشيطان يستعملها لإغواء الإنسان...
في هذا الإطار يأتي الكتاب الذي بين يدينا والذي يفصل القول في آفات اللسان فيذكرها واحدة بحدودها وأسبابها، ثم يعرف طريق الاحتراز بعد أن يورد ما ورد في الأخبار والآثار في ذمها.
