منذ ظهور اللسانيات باعتباره علما من أحدث العلوم الإنسانية، اهتم اللسانيون في أبحاثهم بالمستويين الصواتي والصرافي للغات البشرية، وفي هذا الكتاب نبين أن اللغويين العرب القدامى لم يفتهم أيضا الاهتمام بصواتة اللغة العربية وصرافتها في كتب الصرف، حيث ميزوا بين تصريف لفظي مجاله الأبواب الصواتية، وتصريف معنوي مجاله الأبواب الصرافية. وقد حرصنا في الأبحاث الصواتية والصرافية الواردة، في هذا الكتاب، على إبراز الحضور القوي والمتميز للغة الضاد في النظريات اللسانية التوليدية، وحاولنا أن نقف عند جوانب الاتفاق والاختلاف بين تحليلات القدامى للظواهر الصواتية والصرافية، وبين تحليلات اللسانيين الواردة في ثلاث نظريات، هي النظرية المعيار للصواتة التوليدية التي تندرج في إطارها النظري أبحاث الفصل الأول من هذا الكتاب، ونظرية الصواتة المستقلة القطع التي خصصنا لها أبحاث الفصل الثاني، ثم نظرية هندسة السمات التي كان لصواتة اللغة العربية دور هام في نماذجها الصواتية الهندسية، وهذا ما ناقشناه في أبحاث الفصل الثالث من هذا الكتاب
