منذ أوائل القرن التاسع عشر بدأت الحكومات الأوروبية ترسل الرحالة والمبعوثين إلى البلاد العربية والإسلامية بذرائع مختلفة، لعل أهمها الكشوف الجغرافية والبحث عن الآثار، ولكن معظم هؤلاء الرحالة كانوا في الحقيقة جواسيس من أجل دراسة أحوال البلاد الاقتصادية والسياسية والمذهبية، وإيجاد السبل التي تساعد على استعمارها
وتندرج رحلة غيرترود لوثيان بل ضمن هذا الطراز من الرحلات، وقد أدت غيرتورد هذه دوراً في رسم السياسة البريطانية في بدايات القرن العشرين، وأثناء وبعد الحرب العالمية الأولى، وكذلك في تنفيذ معاهدة سايكس بيكو التي تم بموجبها اقتسام البلاد التي كانت خاضعة للدولة العثمانية بين الفرنسيين والإنكليز.
إن القارئ يستطيع بسهولة أن يكشف تركيزها على التباين العرقي والمذهبي في المجتمع السوري آنذاك، الأمر الذي يفسر تمزيق بلاد الشام فيما بعد إلى دويلات على أساس طائفي ومذهبي، والتمهيد لإقامة كيان قومي يهودي فيما بعد.
ومع ذلك فإن هذا الكتاب الذي تنشره مكتبة العبيكان يقدم صوراً عن جوانب من حياة المجتمع، وعن أوضاع الدولة العثمانية والطبقة الحاكمة إضافة للأوضاع الاقتصادية والاجتماعية ومشاهد من حياة الناس.
