سلام عابر محاولة لتأسيس وعي جديد للهزيمة، كما تتكشف أبعادها في السلام الآتي، تنطلق من قناعة بضرورة النقد الذاتي لكنها تتصدى لموجة كره الذات الهاجمة بقوة، إنه وقت للمواساة، يقول لنا جوزيف سماحة، ووقت للعناد وللاستنهاض. الأولوية هي إذا لاسترجاع البديهيات ولرصد ورفض مظاهر الاستبطان العربي لخطاب العدو عن نفسه وعنا. ليست الغاية التقويم، فالتمسك بالبديهيات يتزاوج، عند سماحة، مع إدراك عميق لتفاعلات الساحة الدولية منذ نصف قرن. ولعل أهميته تحديداً في كونه يقترن بحس مرهف، لا مثيل له على الأرجح في الأدب السياسي المنشور بالعربية، لخصوصية "المسألة اليهودية" ولفرادة "المحرقة" النازية، وبقراءة متميزة لارتباطها بالوعي الغربي وبالطريقة التي تم فيها توظيف الكيان الإسرائيلي. إن هذا التزاوج بين صلابة عربية لا تخجل الإفصاح عن نفسها ووعي كوني رحب هو ما يسمح للكاتب أن يرسم طموحاً عالمياً كبيراً للعرب: ليبس حل القضية الفلسطينية، وإنما حل القضية الإسرائيلية، وبوسائل لا يعقل أن تكون محض عسكرية، ومن ثم توفير "حل نهائي" عربي لـ "مسألة اليهودية" من خلال إعادة صياغة مشروع النهضة العربية في اتجاء يتيح التحرر من إسار "السلام" والتقدم نحو الديمقراطية في آن معاً.
