ترجع أهمية الدراسات التربوية المقارنة في عالمنا اليوم إلى الدور الذي نثرى به النظرية التربوية والفكر التربوي وربما ترجع أهميتها أيضاً إلى الدور الذي يمكن أن تقوم به في تطوير نظم التعليم، وحل مشكلاتها وتحديثها.
وقد تعود هذه الأهمية إلى دور هذا العلم - علم التربية المقارنة - في تأصيل العلاقة بين التعليم كمنظومة فرعية والمجتمع والنظر إلى التعليم كقضية مجتمعية يتفاعل مع النظريات الأخرى ويؤثر فيها ويتأثر بها، وقد كان لتطور هذا العلم وبخاصة في الدول المتقدمة وإعتماده على أساليب منهجية يكاد ينفرد بها دور ملحوظ في إتخاذ القرارات المتصلة برسم السياسات التعليمية ووضع إجراءات تحقيقها في هذه الدول.
وإذا كانت تلك هي النظرة إلى التربية المقارنة في الدول المتقدمة فإن هناك حاجة ماسة إلى نظرة علمية مماثلة في الدول النامية ذلك أن الدول النامية قد تكون أكثر حاجة - وهي بالفعل - إلى دراسات في التربية المقارنة تفيد منها في دراسة مشكلاتها التعليمية، ووضع أسس علاجها وهذه الدول تواجه مشكلات تعليمية متعددة لها جذورها الإجتماعية وهي في علاجها لهذه المشكلات يجب أن تنظر إلى تعليمها بإعتباره قضية من قضايا المجتمع لا تعمل بمعزل عن أوضاعه الأخرى وظروفه وثقافته وهي في علاجها أيضاً لهذه المشكلات بحاجة إلى التعرف على الخبرات التعليمية الأجنبية وتجارب المجتمعات الأخرى - المتقدمة والنامية - والجهود التي بذلتها في علاج مشكلاتها.
ويضم هذا الكتاب عدة فصول يتناول الفصل الأول منها التربية المقارنة (تعريفها، ووظائفها، وأهدافها، وميادينها، ومصادرها)، والفصل الثاني شمل مراحل تطور التربية المقارنة، وتناول الفصل الثالث العوامل المؤثرة في تشكيل النظم التعليمية، والفصل الرابع تناول الإتجاهات العاملة للتعليم في الدول الرأسمالية، واستعرض الفصل الخامس خبرات لرياض الأطفال في بعض دول العالم، وتناول الفصل السادس مقارنة للسياسة التعليمية لرياض الأطفال في كل من جمهورية مصر العربية وفرنسا.
