هذا الكتاب مجموعة من المحاضرات التي ألقيتها على طلبة السداسي السادس وطلبة السداسي الثامن في جامعة قسنطينة بالجزائر/معهد الآداب واللغة العربية. ثم ألقيتها في جامعة سبها/كلية التربية/قسم اللغة العربية، على طلب السنة الأخيرة بعد أن أسندت لي مهمة تدريس الأدب العربي الحديث فيها، وذلك بعد إجراء شيء من التوسع والتعديل عليها.
ونظراً لشكوى طلابي خاصة، وأغلب الطلاب في جامعاتنا العربية من عدم حصولهم على المصادر والمراجع التي تضم المواد المقررة عليهم أو التي تمدهم بما يحتاجون إليه من علوم ومعارف كلفوا بها، فقد قررت طبع هذه المحاضرات الخاصة بمادة النثر العربي الحديث بعد الإضافة والتعديل والرجوع إلى المصادر والمراجع العامة ومتابعتها في مختلف مكتباتنا في العراق ومصر والشام والجزائر وليبيا وغيرها كي أشبع حاجة طلابي وبعض حاجة مكتبتنا العربية.
ولأن الكتاب-كما يظهر في عنوانه-مختص بدراسة النثر الحديث فإنني عمدت إلى عدم تناول ما هو خارج هذا الاختصاص، عدا صورة مصغرة عن النثر قبل النهضة العربية الحديثة وما كان يشيع فيه من صنعة وتكلف، وعن أسباب تلك النهضة ونتائجها.
أما فيما يخص النثر العربي الحديث فإنني تناولت أبرز ألوانها والتي هي المقالة القصة الخطابة، المسرحية، السيرة مفرداً لكل لون منها فصلاً خاصاً به درست فيه-وإن كان رائدي التركيز والاختصار-أغلب ما يتعلق بذلك اللون من تعريف، وأنواع، وعناصر، وتناولته تاريخياً ونقدياً قدر الإمكان وقدر ما تقتضيه حاجة الموضوع وبلورته.
