لقد عرضت فصول هذا الكتاب صورة لمظهر من مظاهر المحنة العراقية، وقد جاءت خطوط هذه الصورة بأحداث رسمتها تجارب ذاتية رواها من عاش مراحلها بنفسه وقد تناولتها فقرات الفصل الأول، بينما عرض الفصل الثاني إلى تجارب أدبية شعرية جسدت مفاهيم التجارب الذاتية التي صورت مشاهد الفصل الأول، وعرضتها بصور الاستبداد والمطاردة والتشريد وغيرها. فقد جاءت تجارب الشعراء في الفصل الثاني على اختلاف مشاربهم الدينية والسياسية وعلى اختلاف أماكن مهاجرهم ومواطن غربتهم موثقة لما سطرته التجارب الذاتية من النتائج المؤلمة لمحنة العراق، التي سببتها مواقف النخبة من السياسيين ورجال الدين، خاصة في العقود الأربعة الماضية لتاريخ هذا الكتاب.
فكان من جلاء تلك النتائج ظاهرة نفسية أملأها الأسف والندم على ما وصلت إليه أحوال العراق كوطن وشعب، فجاءت الشروح المتعلقة بـ "الويل" وبـ"المحنة" وبـ "الولاء" حيث استوفى الفصل الثالث أغلب تطبيقات هذه المفاهيم في الحالة العراقية. ولما كانت "الهجرة" و"اللجوء" هي من جملة تلك النتائج، عرض الفصل الرابع تفصيل القول في هذين الجانبين من جهة انفعال الشعراء بصورة الهجرة، وانطابعاتهم أو ما يعانونه من اللجوء إلى خارج وطنهم، فجاء الفصل الخامس يصور الضياع العراقي، موضحاً الدور الذي لعبته أثار الغربة في الشخصية العراقية في مواطن الهجرة واللجوء.
أما الجانب القاتم الآخر من صورة المحنة العراقية التي خلص إليها الكاتب هي الحالة الغريبة للموت العراقي، حيث جسد الفصل السادس ذلك باستعراض وثائق القتل الغريب للعراقيين، وما بقى للوطن العراق من صورة في نفوس المهجرين منهم بعد هذه السلسلة من المحن.
وخلص الفصل السابع إلى الإجابة عما يستفسر به المرء عن ماهية الزعيم المطلوب للحالة العراقية، وعن مؤهلاته ومصادرها، وما ينبغي له من صفاء الروح ونقاء السريرة، ونكران الذات وغيره مما يساعده على جمع الشمل وإنقاذ الوطن.
