الكلمة التي تقابل تربية في أبرز اللغات الأوروبية وهي الإنجليزية (Education) وهي مشتقة من الكلمات اللاتينية (Eeo) أو (Educare) وهي تعنى في تلك اللغة ان تقود إلى الخارج، ومن ثم فإن مفهوم التربية عند الذين تبنوا هذا الإتجاه أو أنطلقوا من هذا المدلول هو البحث عن المعاني الفطرية عند الطفل، وإستخراجها بدلاً من فرض إتجاهات معينة عليه، ومن ثم ترتيبها بصورة مسبقة، لهذا فإن أصحاب هذا الإتجاه يرون أن المدرس، كالزارع الذي يتعهد النبات (وليس كصاحب الصنعة الذي ينتج إنتاجاً معيناً) إن مهمة المربى تشجيع الإزدهار والنمو الطبيعي للفرد بدلاً من صياغته في قالب معين وكلمة التربية مصدر الفعل (رب) ومنه الرب، ويطلق في اللغة على المالك والسيد والمدبر والمربى والقيم والمنعم والمصلح، ولا يقال الرب لغير الله تعالى إلا بإضافة كرب البيت ورب الأسرة ورب الإبل ونحو ذلك، ورب يرجع: جمع وزاد ولزم وأقام ورب الولد ربا ورباه تربية وتعهده بما يغذيه وينميه ويؤدبه، أي أمده بما يزيده مبنى ومعنى.
