تناول هذا الكتاب منهج التدرج الزمني عبر ثلالة حقول نقدية للوقوف على تطور حركة النقد العربي النظري والتطبيقي، ومعرفة الأسس النظرية الفكرية التي اعتمدها النقاد في تحديد مناهج النقدية، بدءاً بما تحتاجه صناعة الشعرمن شروط لإقامة الشعر وفق أسس ومعايير رآها ابن خلدون ضرورية لصقل الموهبة الشعرية، مثل الملكة والذوق الفني الدربة والمران وغيرها، ومروراً برؤية إحسان عباس ومنهجه النقدي في دراسة الشعر، ثم وقفنا على الثنائيات الفلسفية في شعر البياتي واتجاهاته الفنية، وعلى الرمز والأسطورة والأقنعة في شعره، وانتهاءً بصيرورة الحداثة النقدية بمواقف البنيويين ورؤيتهم النقدية لرواية "موسم الهجرة إلى الشمال" التي كشفت منهجهم في نقد النص الأدبي، والمأزق الذي وقعت فيه البنيوية، وبخاصة اعتماد التوفيقية في بعض الدراسات البنيوية للخروج من هذه الإشكاليات.
