إنّ بعضَ القُرَّاء، لا سيّما أولئكَ الذينَ يعتبرونَ أنفسَهم بيضاً، أنقياء العرق، ستزرّقُ وجوهُهم غيظاً، قبلَ أنَّ يكونوا قد أكملوا دزينةً من الصفحات، وسيقولونَ بحدّةٍ بأنّه لا يمكنُ لهم أنَّ يثقوا بقدرةٍ أنفسِهم على الكلام، أنا أيضاً لا أثقُ بنفسي، إنّما لسببٍ آخر: إنّ الكتابَ يبدو لي نظيفاً إلى حدٍّ لا يوصف، وإنّي لأتلعثمُ في كلماتٍ قادرةٍ على إيصال ذلك، مُتفادياً البلاغة والإطناب، فإنّه قد أصابَ القلبَ في الصمَيمِ بموضوعيتِهِ، وطهره.
لا أحدَ منّا طاهر، ولا ينبغي لنا أنّ نكونَ أحياءً لو كنّا طاهرين، لكنْ بالنسبة للبصير، يمكنُ لجميعِ الأشياء أنَّ تُصبحَ طاهرة...
ما كانَ لـ "المنبوذ" أنْ تُكتَبَ إلَّا على يدِ هنديّ، وليس سوى هنديّ كانَ يُراقبُ التفاصيل من الخارج، فما كانَ لأوروبيّ، مهما كانَ مُتعاطفاً، أنّ يخلق شخصيةَ بكَا، إذ لن يكون على معرفةٍ كافةٍ بمتاعبِهِ.
وما كانَ بإستطاعةِ منبوذ أنَّ يؤلّفَ هذهِ الرواية، لأنّه سيَكونُ متورّطاً في حالةٍ من السخط والإشفاقِ على الذات، يقفُ السيد "آنَنَد" في موقعٍ مثاليّ.
