للغة العربية اختصاص من سائر اللغات، وتغزو عن سواها من العبارات، وذلك بما تحويه من رشاقة ألفاظها وسلاستها وعذوبتها، وما تشتمل عليه من الحقيقة والمجاز والبسط والإيجاز والاقتصار فيها على اللمحة، والاستفتاء منها باللمعة، والاكتفاء بالإشارة عن العبارة، وعن الصريح بالكناية، وعن الحقيقة بالاستعارة والفرق منها بين التذكير والتأنيث في الخطاب، والفصل بينهما في تصاريف وجده الأعراب، إلى غير ذلك من معان هي عليها مقصورة، وفيما عداها من اللغات مفقودة، ومن خلال كتابه هذا "المنتخب" جمع الجرجاني ما عثر عليه من الكنايات الفائقة، والإشارات الرائعة، والنوادر البديعة، والرموز المليحة، والمعاني المبتكرة، والنكت المحررة، والألفاظ المحيرة، وكذلك بعضاّ من الحكايات الأنيقة، والأشعار الحسنة الرقيقة ما يملك السمع والبصر وإعجابه، ومن تأمل في درر هذه الكتاب ازداد حرصاً على تأملها، وعاد ليتصفح الكتاب مستعيداً ما يستحليه من فوائده، هذا وإن للجرجاني ومؤلفاته عموماً أهمية في مجال اللغة ولهذا الكتاب أهميته على وجه الخصوص، فهو من التصانيف مبتكرة في موضوعه وفي طريقته، فهو لم يسبقه إليه أحد من أقرانه في عصره.
