يعرف المجاز المرسل بأنه مجاز لغوي يرتبط فيه المعنى الحقيقي بالمعنى المجازي بعلاقة هي غير المشابهة، وسمي بالمرسل، لأنه غير مقيد بعلاقة المشابهة، إذا أن الإرسال في اللغة الإطلاق، والمجاز الاستعاري مقيد بادعاء أن المشبه من جنس المشبه به، والمجاز المرسل مطلق على هذا القيد، والكناية في الاصطلاح لفظ أطلق وأريد به لازم معناه، مع جواز إرادة ذلك المعني... أو هي اللفظ الدال على معنيين مختلفين: حقيقة ومجازاً في غير واسطة لا على جهة التصريح.
وفي هذا الكتاب دراسة تدور حول الأبعاد المعرفية والجمالية للمجاز المرسل والكناية. خصص الجزء الأول من الكتاب للبحث في جماليات المرسل وماهيته، واستوعب ذلك فصولاً ثلاثة هي، الأول: مفهوم المجاز في بحوث النقاد والبلاغيين واللغويين العرب القدامى، الثاني: علاقات المجاز المرسل، الثالث: جماليات المجاز المرسل، وأما الكناية وماهيتها وجمالياتها فقد استوعبتها فصول الجزء الثاني الثلاث وهي، الأول: مفهوم الكناية في بحوث النقاد والبلاغيين واللغويين العرب القدامى، الثاني: أقسام الكناية، الثالث: جماليات الكناية.
