عندما قدم الملك الإنكليزي ريتشارد الأول للمشاركة في الحملة الصليبية الثالثة، احتل، وهو في طريقه إلى عكا، جزيرة قبرص. وقد باع هذه الجزيرة بعد ذلك إلى غي لوزنان، الذي كان ملك القدس، ووقع أسيراً في معركة حطين، وأسهم ملوك أسرة لوزنان في أحداث جميع الحملات الصليبية، وحملوا في الآونة الأخيرة لقب ملوك مملكة القدس، ولذلك استمروا في نشاطاتهم ضد السواحل الأناضولية، والشامية والقبرصية، وكان من أبرزهم الملك بطرس الأول الذي قام بجولة واسعة على العواصم الأوروبية للإعداد الحملة الصليبية الكبيرة. وقد أتت جهوده كلها عام 1365، حينما اجتاح مع قوته مدينة الإسكندرية، ملحقاً بها دماراً مريعاً بقيت أثاره حتى العصر الحديث، وكان في الإسكندرية وقت الاجتياح محمد بن قاسم النويري الإسكندراني، فأودع لنا مشاهداته في كتاب سماه "الإلمام بالإعلام فيما جرت به الأحكام والأمور المقضية في وقعة الإسكندرية" جرى نشره في سبعة أجزاء في حيدر آباد الدكن في الهند، فيما بين 1968-1276، وأودع النويري في كتابه استطرادات كثيرة، لذلك عمدت إلى استخراج ما تعلق بالواقعة، ومواد النويري روايات شاهد عيان تنبض بالحياة، وتصور الصراعات الاقتصادية في القرن الرابع عشر، وأوضاع السلطنة المملوكية بعد وفاة السلطان الناصر محمد.
إنها المرة الأولى التي ينشر هذا الكتاب بشكله الجديد، بعد ضبطه وإزالة الأخطاء والتصحيفات التي ألمت بنصه.
