يعرض هذا الكتاب في إيجاز لكيفية كتابة البحث العلمي في التاريخ، وهو ضمن سلسلة من المحاضرات ألقاها المؤلف على طلابه في الدراسات العليا في جامعة جنوب الوادي، وهدفه إعطاء طالب الدراسات العليا فكرة عامة عن خطوات البحث العلمي، ومعرفة المقاييس التي يستطيع بها أن يحكم على الكتابة التاريخية، وحتى يتسنى له معرفة القواعد الرئيسة لكتابة البحث العلمي، ولينير الطريق له للبحث في التاريخ أثناء كتابة الأبحاث المختلفة.
ولذا، عرض لإختيار موضوع البحث الذي يختلف من باحث لآخر تبعاً لإختلاف المستوى العلمي وحصيلة الثقافة، ثم تحدث عن وضع خطة البحث التي تعني تبويب الرسالة تبويباً أولياً، أي تقسيم البحث إلى أبواب وفصول تسهيلاً للدراسة.
وتعرض الكتاب بعد ذلك في إيجاز لجمع المادة التاريخية، ثم الدخول في عملية أساسية قبل الشروع في كتابة البحث في شكله النهائي، وهي عملية تحليل هذه المادة وفرزها والتثبت من صحتها، وهذه العملية إحدى عمليات المنهج الأساسية، وتعرف بنقد الأصول.
