في اليمن تراث عريق وغنيّ، تناول فنوناً مختلفة، وعلوماً متعددة تتصل جذورها العميقة بمنابع الحضارة العربية الإسلامية، فقد برزت مشاركة أهل اليمن في صنع هذه الحضارة حين رفدوها بعدد كبير من العلماء الإجلاء الذين تركوا آثاراً رائعة تدل على مدى الثراء الفكري الذي اتسم به الدرس العلمي في اليمن. والأخفش-صاحب كتابنا هذا-واحد من أولئك العلماء الذين ألفوا في عدد من العلوم تآليف جيدة في بابها، تشهد لصاحبها بعلو طبقته ورفعة منزلته، منها هذا الكتاب الذي تتضح أهميته مما أتى: أولاً في انه يتناول مبحثاً مهماً في النحو العربي، وهو أحكام شبه الجملة (إبحار والمجرور والظرف) ولا ينكر المشتغلون بهذه الصنعة صعوبة هذه الأحكام مع توزعها في كتب النحو على مباحث متعددة، وأبواب مختلفة، فاستطاع الأخفش أن يجمع معظم هذه الأحكام في هذا الكتاب بعد تبويبها تبويباً محكماً وترتيبها ترتيباً حسناً، فصار عقداً وسيماً تبدو منه دقة الصنعة، وبراعة السبك، وحسن التصنيف، ثانياً: في أنه صار معتمداً في بابه فشرحه-لأهميته ونفعه-الأخفش نفسه ثم توالى عدد من العلماء عليه شارحين غامضة، موضحين مبهمة.
