الواقع أن التاريخ العثماني أكثر ما يجذب الروائيين الأتراك، فهو تاريخهم الأكثر إزدهاراً من ناحية، لإحتوائه على كمّ هائل من الوثائق التي يمكن الإعتماد عليها، كما أنه مرّ بفترات منقلّبة، من ناحية أخرى، حيث شهدت الأسر المالكة الكثير من المؤامرات والإغتيالات، وهذه كلها موضوعات جذابة للروائي، إضافة إلى "الحرملك" ذلك العالم الأنثوي السحري الذي يحلّق فيه الروائي عالياً.
"بارليتا" وهي الحظية التي قُدّمت إلى السلطان سليم الثاني بعد اختطافها من إيطاليا، دخلت الحرملك وأسميت بديعة، لتكون أنموذجاً من نماذج سلطة الحريم، والتي تعني في الأصل تحكم سلطانات وجواري "الحرملك" في السلطنة، وتوجيههن للسلاطين، وكذلك الوزراء والباشوات فيما يردن دون التقيّد بمصلحة الدولة، وهو ما أدى إلى خلل خطير في الدولة العثمانية، كما أدى لى زيادة نفوذ الحرملك والجنود الإنكشاريين.
"بارليتا" هي الحظية الإيطالية الحسناء التي نافست السلطانة نور باني على قلب السلطان سليم الثاني، تلك المنافسة، التي هزّت أركان الحرملك وأنهكت جسد السلطان العاشق.
