في مرحلة الطفولة المبكرة ينشط الأطفال في إكتساب المفاهيم الأساسية وتعلم العمليات الأساسية للمهارات، والمفاهيم هي حجارة بناء المعرفة، التي تيسر للأفراد تنظيم المعلومات وتصنيفها، ويمكن تطبيق المفاهيم في حل مشكلات جديدة، يواجهها الفرد في حياته اليومية، وإذا ما شاهدنا أنشطة الأطفال في حياتهم اليومية، فإنا نشاهد أن قد تكونت لديهم مفاهيم في الرياضيات، وأنهم يستعملونها.
وهذا الكتاب الذي بين أيدينا وضعه المؤلف لمساعدة أباء ومعلمات الأطفال الذين تتراوح أعمارهم ما بين (3-6) سنوات على بناء المفاهيم والخبرات الرياضية الملائمة لأطفالهم هؤلاء، وتصميم أنشطة تساعد الأطفال على إكتساب هذه الخبرات داخل المدرسة وفي المنازل وخارجها في البيئة المحيطة بهم، بحيث تكون ملائمة وممتعة لهم، وتحفز عقولهم على التفكير في حل مشكلات الرياضيات بحيث تتحدى هذه المشكلات عقول الأطفال، وتثيرها للنمو والتطور.
ومن أجل تحقيق ذلك، وضع المؤلف كتابه في مقدمة وثلاثة أبواب تقع في اثني عشر فصلاً، يتألف من مقدمة وثلاثة أبواب تقع في اثني عشر فصلاً، أما الباب الأول: الرياضيات وتعليمها للأطفال، فيتألف من ثلاثة فصول: الفصل الأول: يتناول التفكير في محتوى الرياضيات، ويتناول الفصل الثاني: طبيعة الرياضيات وتعليمهم الرياضيات، ويتناول الفصل الثالث: طبيعة الرياضيات والأطفال الصغار.
أما الباب الثاني: مفاهيم ما قبل الرياضيات، يتألف من ثلاثة فصول: الفصل الرابع: مفهوم المجموعات والتصنيف، الفصل الخامس: مفهوم المقابلة واحد لواحداً بين عناصر مجموعتين، الفصل السادس: مفهوم الترتيب.
أما الباب الثالث: مفاهيم الرياضيات، يتألف من ستة فصول: الفصل السابع: مفهوم العد والعدد، الفصل الثامن: مفهوم الجبر لصف الروضة وما قبله، الفصل التاسع: مفهوم الهندسة لصف الروضة وما قبله، الفصل العاشر: مفاهيم المقارنة والجزء والكل، الفصل الحادي عشر: مفهوم القياس، الفصل الثاني عشر: مفاهيم الإحصاء وجمع البيانات والإحتمالات والرسم البياني.
