حظيت نظرية العامل باهتمام كبير في النحو العربي، وكثر الحديث عنها قديماً وحديثاً، وانقسم الباحثون بين مؤيد لها وثائر عليها، المؤلف وليد الأنصاري يدرس هذه النظرية دراسة واعية منصفة ليخلص إلى رأي يرى فيه وجه الحق. وشجعه على ذلك أنه لم يجد أحد من الباحثين درس هذه النظرية دراسة وافية.
وقد جعل هذا البحث في تمهيد وثلاثة أبواب وخلاصة. تحدث في التمهيد عن تأثر الدراسة النحوية بالمنطق، لما لهذا التأثر من علاقة بفلسفة العامل، وبين الزمن الذي حدث فيه هذا التأثر ونواحيه.
وأما الباب الأول فقد ضم فصلين، تحدث في الفصل الأول عن العلة وعلاقتها بالعامل، فدرس نشأة العلة وتطورها وطبيعتها وأقسامها، وبين كيف تولد العامل من خلال البحث في العلل النحوية.
وفي الفصل الثاني بحث في تاريخ العامل وتعريفه وحقيقته، ثم ذكر العوامل اللفظية والعوامل المعنوية عند البصريين والكوفيين.
وخصص الباب الثاني لبحث خلافات النحويين في العوامل، فاختار سبع عشرة قضية خلافية، ومهدت له بمدخل بين فيه معايير اختيارها، وحرص على أن تكون هذه القضايا متنوعة لكي توضح فلسفة النحويين في العامل، وكان في كل قضية أتتبع آراء النحويين، من بصريين وكوفيين، ولم يقتصر على ما جمعه الأنباري والسيوطي، بل رجع إلى كتب النحوي نفسه، إن وجد، وإلى غيرها من كتب النحو، ما استطعت، مما أتاح له تصحيح بعض المفاهيم، وإغناء بعضها الآخر.
أما الباب الثالث فقد اشتمل على فصلين، كان الفصل الأول بعنوان "الثورة على نظرية العامل"، وفيه ذكر طائفة من الباحثين الذين حاولوا الخروج على هذه النظرية، قديماً وحديثاً، ثم اختر ثلاث محاولات وناقشتها، وهي محاولة ابن مضاء القرطبي ومحاولة الأستاذ إبراهيم مصطفى ومحاولة الدكتور تمام حسان، ومهد له بمدخل بين فيه سبب اختياري لهذه المحاولات الثلاث.
وفي الفصل الثاني ذكر ما يؤخذ على نظرية العامل، وفق ما رأى في المذهب البصري، وهو التكلف وسوء التقدير في بعض الأحيان، واختر عدداً من المسائل النحوية وناقشتها، لتكون نموذجاً يوضح ذلك.
ولخص في الخلاصة أهم ما جاء في البحث مبيناً أبرز النتائج التي وصل إليها.
