"تحتضن الأرض كل شيء عليها كالأم، والحياة تضج على سطح الأرض وفي باطنها، فالتراب يستقبل المطر لتنمو النباتات والأشجار، فتوفر الطعام للكائنات الحية عليها، وكذلك تعيش العديد من الحيوانات تحت الأرض، كما تختزن الأرض المعادن التي نستخدمها في الصناعة وللزينة إلى جانب النفط والفحم الحجري الذي نحتاجهما كطاقة". ولأن كثيراً من أطفالنا لا يعرفون شيئاً عن الأرض من الناحية الجيولوجية جاء هذا الكتاب بمعلوماته المبسطة ورسوماته الزاهية ليقرب المعنى أكثر إلى ذهن الطفل ويساهم في تعليمه وتثقيفه. حيث تكتسب الأرض أهميتها من كونها الوحيدة التي عرفت الحياة على مرّ السنون في باطنها وعلى سطحها، فهل تعلم عزيزي الطفل "أن الأرض تقوم بتنقية المياه القذرة ونحن البشر كسائر الأحياء لا يمكننا العيش من دون الأرض. فنحن نستخدم التراب لبناء بيوتنا، ونزرع طعامنا فيه" وهل تعلم "أن الأرض تختزن الكثير من المواد الثمينة (...) كالحديد...". ولو "لم تكن هناك نباتات، لما تمكنت الحيوانات من العيش على الأرض". وهذا يعني أننا جميعاً كبشر أطفالاً وشباباً وشيوخاً مسؤولين عن هذه الأرض "التي تعطينا الحياة".
