الإمام عبد الرحمن بن عمرو بن يحمد الأوزاعي، عالم أهل الشام وفقيههم عرف بغزارة علمه وفضله، والمؤلفات فيه كثيرة لكن معظمها يدور حول سيرته أو فقهه ولم يعن أحد بجمع رواياته الحديثية من كتب الصحاح والسنن والسير و غيرهما. وربما يعود ذلك إلى أن معظم أمالي الإمام الأوزاعي قد احترق أو فقد أثره. وقد ذكرت طائفة من العلماء أن للأوزاعي مدونات في علم الحديث جمع فيها الحديث الصحيح وآثار التابعين ومن سمع منهم، واستخرج الأحكام الشرعية على مذهب انفرد به.
وقد انبرى مصنف هذا الكتاب للقيام بمهمة جمع الأحاديث التي رواها الأوزاعي بعد أن اختار القرن الخامس حداً فاصلاً للمصادر المعتمدة وهي الفترة التي ضمت العصر الذهبي لتدوين الحديث. ورتب المصادر حسب الأهمية في الكتب الستة، واعتمد في هذا على كتاب التذكرة للذهبي وكتابي طبقات الحفاظ وتدريب الراوي للسيوطي وقام بجمع الأحاديث المرفوعة فقط، ورتب المسانيد على حروف المعجم، وقدم الرجال على النساء كما هو متبع في كتب التراجم، ورتب متن الحديث وخرجه وفق ترتيب المصادر، ولم يخرج في الكتاب إلا ما كان من طريق الأوزاعي وشرح الألفاظ الغريبة، وبين أرقان الآيات القرآنية وأعد فهرساً للأحاديث.
