تعتبر السنة النبوية المصدر التشريعي الثاني بعد كتاب الله، فهي التي فسرت القرآن الكريم وفصلت العموميات وبينت المجمل، ووضحت طرق التشريع ونظمه. لأجل ذلك كان كل جهد يبذل في سبيل حفظ السنة النبوية، هو جهد يبذل في سبيل حفظ هذا الدين، وكل لبنة توضع في هذا البناء، لبنة توضع لتشييد صرح هذا الدين. من هذا المنطلق، ولهذه الأهمية البالغة للسنة المشرفة، هيأ الله لها رجالاً أعلاماً، ورواة أئمة قاموا بحفظها وروايتها فاجتهدوا في التوثق من صحة كل حديث، ووضعوا القواعد العلمية الصحيحة لمعرفة من يقبل ومن لا يقبل من الرواة، وما يقبل ويرد من الأحاديث. فكان لتلك القواعد الأثر الكبير في حفظ السنة وبيان صحيحها من سقيمها. وقد سمي هذا العلم بعلم أصول الحديث، وعلوم الحديث، ومصطلح الحديث، وعلم دراية الحديث. هذا وقد كتب العلماء فيه من عصر التدوين إلى يومنا هذا نفائس في هذا العلم.
وهذا الكتاب الذي بين يدي القارئ (الاقتراح في بيان الإصلاح) هو أحد تلك المصنفات النفيسة في هذا الفن. وزيادة في الفائدة، وخدمة له ولما حظي به من قيمة علمية، وبما امتاز به من حسن ترتيب وتبويب، إضافة إلى مكانة مؤلفه ومنزلته العلمية، جعل ذلك كله علماء مصطلح الحديث أن يتناولوه نظماً وشرحاً واقتباساً. لهذا تمّ الاعتناء به، حيث كان محل دراسة وتحقيق الباحث، وذلك في إطار رسالة علمية تقدم بها وحصل من خلالها على درجة الماجستير من كلية الشريعة والدراسات الإسلامية بجامعة أم القرى بمكة المكرمة.
هذا وقد تمّ تقسيم الرسالة إلى قسمين: القسم الأول الدراسة التي تمّ فيها تناول عصر ابن دقيق (اسمه ونسبه ومولده وصفاته ومذهبه وطلبه للعلم وحياته العلمية). ثم تمّ اختتام هذا القسم بعقد فصل في قيمة كتاب "الاقتراح" العلمية ومنزلته بين كتب المصطلح. أما القسم الثاني: فقد كان في تحقيق الكتاب "الاقتراح" لابن دقيق العيد.
