جورج كانغيلِم (1995- 1904)، فيلسوف وطبيب فرنسي، خريج دار المعلمين العليا.
متخصص في الإبستمولوجيا وتاريخ العلوم، تناولت أبحاثه تاريخ البيولوجيا والطب، أجيز في الطب عام 1943، وعمل طبيباً ميدانياً فترة المقاومة ضد النازية.
خليفة غاستون باشلار، وبالتالي فهو يندرج في تقاليد الإبستمولوجيا التاريخية الفرنسية، ترك تأثيراً على ميشيل فوكو وعلى بيير بورديو وغيرهما.
يتبنى كانغيلم المنهج الرجوعي الذي يقرأ ماضي العلم إنطلاقاً من حاضره، وبهذا فهو ينظر إلى الأيديولوجيا العلمية بصفتها خطاباً يسبق العلم، اعتمد نموذجاً من علم قائم، مما يجعله قاصراً عن إستيعاب موضوعه، وهذا ينعكس على تقلقل أساسه وعدم دقة مناهجه.
فتأتي الأيديولوجيا، كتزييف للواقع، لتعوض نقص الدقة في تحديد الموضوع، بأن تسقط عليه أفكاراً وقيماً غريبة عنه، وتعمَم نتائجه على مجالات أخرى لتشرعن ممارسات إجتماعية أو سياسية أو إقتصادية.
ومن هنا، فإن كانغيلم ينتقد فكرة الريادة في تاريخ العلوم التي تنتمي إلى فترة ما قبل العلم.
كما أنه يرى في العقلانية منهجاً للبحث، وليست مذهباً، لذلك يمتلك كل علم معقوليته المتعلقة بخصائص إهتماماته، التي ستفرض بدورها مناهجه، ولهذا فإن المنهج العلمي يقتضي حصر الإهتمام في ميدان تخصصي محدد، هو ما يسمى "ابستمولوجيا محلية أو جهوية" تولي إهتماماً بالإشكالات المعرفية التي يثيرها هذا الميدان التخصصي.
يتناول الكتاب عدداً من المواضيع التي أثارها التقدم الطبي في القرن التاسع عشر ومطلع القرن العشرين، مما يجعله إستكمالاً لبحث ميشيل فوكو حول "مولد الطب السريري".
