كتاب المزكيات من أهم كتب الفوائد التي تنصب عناية مؤلفيها إلى الأسانيد ومفردات الرواة وفوائد المزكي من الكتب الدائرة بين المحدثين والمشهورة لديهم، فقد كان المزكي مشهوراً بتتبع الفوائد واقتناص الغرائب، حتى جمع في كتاب فوائد كثيرة وهو كما يعرف عنه من العلماء المجتهدين، وقد ثنى عليه علماء عصره وروى عنه غير واحد أشهرهم أبو طالب الهمذاني البغدادي البزاز. أما نسخ المزيكات فهي قليلة رغم شهرة المزكيات وكثرة تداول اسمها في الفهارس، وقد تنسى للمحقق الوقوف على ثلاث نسخ اعتمدها في التحقيق، وقابلها ببعض ثم ضبط النص الأصلي وعمد إلى تخريج الآيات والأحاديث والإعلام، كما وضع فهرساً للأحاديث والآثار وآخر للرواة الذين تكلم عليهم الدارقطين وفهرساً للموضوعات في نهاية الكتابة.
