يضم هذا الكتاب البحوث والدراسات التي قُدّمت في المؤتمر التاريخي الثالث الذي عقده المركز العربي الأبحاث ودراسة السياسات في بيروت، بين 22 و 24 نيسان / أبريل 2016، بعنوان "التأريخ العربي وتأريخ العرب: كيف كُتب وكيف يُكتب؟ الإجابات الممكنة".
وهدف المؤتمر إلى البحث في إحتمال كتابة تاريخ العرب، بناء على الأسئلة التي يمكن طرحها من زاوية نظر المؤرخ المعاصر، بدءاً بالسؤال: هل من تاريخ للعرب وحدهم، وهل من تاريخ واحد للعرب، ونهاية بأسئلة التحقيب.
تطرح هذه الأسئلة بالطبع من زاوية نظر التأسيس لأمة عربية، ومن زاوية نظر الدولة العربية بعد الإستقلال، وأخيراً من زوايا نظر نقدية أخرى، رصدها هذا المؤتمر وناقشها، مع أخذ النهضة التي شهدتها الكتابة التاريخية العربية، بدءاً من عشرينيات القرن العشرين وثلاثينياته، واتسمت بإستخدام مناهج البحث التاريخي الحديث.
