دراسة في الخبر في تراثنا السردي العربي من الدراسات الخصبة، ولا أحسب أننا فرغنا من بيان كل ما له من وجوه بنيوية ودلالية وثقافية، على الرغم مما يزيد الآن عن أربعة عقود تقريباً من دراسته والعناية به على وفق المناهج السردية النقدية، وعلى الرغم مما قُدّم فيه من كتب وبحوث ورسائل وأطاريح. ويأتي هذا الكتاب الذي يتضمن دراسات في الخبر العربي ومن خلال كتب بعينها ضمن هذه القناعة.
والكتاب يحتوي خمسة فصول هي:
الفصل الأول كتاب إسمه (فاكهة الخلفاء ومفاكهة الظرفاء) وهو من أدب السلطان أو مرايا الأمراء أو كتب المشورة التي تقدم من خلال الحكاية والخبر النصح للحاكم لتلافي أي خطر قد يهدده أو يهدد ملكه.
الفصل الثاني دراسة بنيوية في كتاب (بلاغات النساء) وما يتضمّنه من محاولة لتقديم المرأة وبلاغتها في القول والفعل في مجتمع ألف بلاغة الرجال وقدراتهم قولاً وفعلاً ولم يألف من المرأة غير الصمت.
الفصل الثالث دراسة أحست أنها جديدة في الخبر، ولكن في كتب النقد، وكأن موضوع الفص هذا هو كتاب ابن قتيبة (الشعر والشعراء).
الفصل الرابع في كتب الباه وتحديداً كتاب (نزهة الألباب فيما لا يوجد في كتاب) للتفتاشي وفيه محاولة اللحديث عن دور الخبر في الأرشفة لحياة العامة تقوم على رغبة مضمرة من المؤلف في نصح القراء، وتوجيههم وتحذيرهم من الشهوة وسلطانها.
والفصل الخامس والأخير هو بمثابة قراءة تأويلية لنماذج من أخبار وردت في سياق سيرتي ابن المقفع والجاحظ أو عنهما، وهما تؤشران وكما قرأهما البحث إلى صراع خفي بين نوعين من التأليف ونوعين من المؤلفين أولهما وهو ابن المقفع تنويري وآخرهما وهور الجاحظ براغماتي يظهر من خلال نوع تأليفهما وعلاقتهما بالقارئ ونهايتهما وصورتهما في كتب السير والأدب.
