يعتبر مؤلف هذا الكتاب "العصور القديمة"، الدكتور جايمس هنري براستد من أعظم المؤرخين الأميركان الذي كتبوا في تاريخ الشرق. وهو من نخبة الكتّاب المجيدين في هذا المجال، فمن خلال هذا الكتاب وترجمته إلى اللسان العربي يتحف المترجم طلبة العلم في الشرق بما طالما شعر أنهم في حاجة إليه، تاريخ عصري يشتمل على نبأ نشوء العمران في بلدان البحر المتوسط وتاريخه القديم، بل أن يعرفهم أيضاً بمؤلفه الدكتور براستد الذي لم يدّخر وسعاً في جعل بلاد الشرق الأدنى معروفة ومشهورة لدى الغرب.
وجاء الكتاب ضمن خمسة أقسام تناول المؤلف في كل تاريخ شعب من الشعوب. فكان القسم الأول للأوربيين القدماء، والثاني لشعوب بلاد الشرق، والثالث لشعوب اليونان والرابع لشعوب بلدان البحر المتوسط في العصر الهليني، والخامسة لشعوب الامبراطورية اليونانية. وقد شمل تأريخ المؤلف لهذه الشعوب نشاطاتها السياسية والاجتماعية والثقافية والدينية والصناعية والزراعية بحيث غطى على جميع النشاطات الإنسانية التي طالها التطور عبر تلك الحقبة التاريخية التي شملتها تلك الدراسات.
