يتحدث هذا الكتاب عن تصنيف الوظائف وذلك من خلال ثمانية فصول مختصرة تناول الأول منها مفهوم عملية التصنيف وأهميتها ومبادئها والتعريف بمصطلحاتها الأساسية، وفي الفصل الثاني تم تناول المرحلة الأولى من تصنيف الوظائف والمتمثلة في كيفية جمع البيانات الوظيفية وتحليلها وتنسيقها، والتي تشكل الخلفية الأساسية لأي في هذا المجال ويبني عليها ما بعدها من مراحل.
وجاء الفصل الثالث ليناقش وصف الوظائف بعد تحليلها والخطوات الواجب اتباعها وكيفية إعداد بطاقات الوصف وصياغة المهام والواجبات الرئيسية والفرعية لكل وظيفة من الوظائف. وكيفية تحديد مطالب التأهيل لها. وأما الفصل الرابع فقد خصص لدراسة مرحلة تقويم الوظائف مع بيان الطرق المتبعة في التقويم، وبعد ذلك كان الفصل الخامس حيث بين كيفية إنشاء المجموعات الوظيفية العامة والنوعية والمسميات الوظيفية ثم الفئات والدرجات.
ووضح الفصل السادس كيفية تنفيذ خطة وبرنامج تصنيف الوظائف مع تركيز خاص على ضرورة المتابعة المستمرة لمثل هذا التنفيذ، وكان لا بد للفصل السابع من أن يضع أمام المدارس النظم المتبعة في تنيف الوظائف أو ترتيبها مع ذكر أهم خصائص ومتطلبات تطبيق كل منها، وانتهى الكتاب بفصل خاص بحثت فيه التجربة الأردنية في تصنيف الوظائف والمجالات التي بذلت في هذا المجال منذ أنشئ ديوان الخدمة المدنية في منتصف الخمسينات.
