ليس سهلا على الباحث أن يوجز الخطوط الكبرى في حياة البحتري، ذلك أن الشاعر العباسي الكبير عاش ثمانين عاما، قضاها كلها في سفر دائب وتنقل مستمر، وسعي وراء الممدوحين وأعطياتهم، في كل بقعة من أرجاء الأمبراطورية العباسية المترامية الأطراف، برّها وبحرها، وهو القائل:
ولقد ركبت البحر في أمواجه / وركبت هول الليل في بياس ، وقطعت أطوال البلاد وعرضها / ما بين سندان وبين سجاس
ولم يكن البحتري يعرف اليأس أو الملل أو التعب، فهو يسهر الليل في صياغة فنه ليبيعه في نهاره بالمال الوفير، ينشده في قصور الخلفاء والوزراء، وفي مجالس الأمراء والولاة والعمال، وفي دواوين الكتاب ومحافل الشعراء، وهو يملأ جيبه بالمال حتى يكتنز.
ويجدر الإشارة أن الصولي هو أوثق المصادر عن البحتري، ذلك أنه عاصره، عرفه وسمع منه وقرأ عليه، وعاش في بغداد، في المواطن التي كان يرتادها البحتري، وصحب الناس الذين كان البحتري يختلف اليهم. ويجعله بذلك قادرا أن يكون مصدر مناسب.
وستقرأ ما يرويه الصولي في هذا الكتاب من أخبار البحتري مع الخلفاء بعد المتوكل، ولن تعجب لما يقصه عليك من تقلبه مع الرياح، فتلك مرونة ذكية من البحتري، عرف كيف يحمي بها نفسه وثروته من الضياع والمصادرات، في عصر يسهم الولد فيه بقتل أبيه، وتسلم الأم إبنها إلى الموت.
غير أنك لن تسمع من الصولي في هذا الكتاب شيئا عن هذه المرحلة الأخيرة من حياة البحتري، ويبدو أن أخبارها لم تصل إليه من دمشق، أو هي لم تصل إلى العراق آنذاك، ولعل الصولي لم يكن قادرا على إذاعتها، فدمشق آنذاك كانت مزورة عن بغداد، والطولونيون فيها دعاة إستقلال وانفصال عن الخلافة المركزية، وكل تمجيد لخمارويه هو في حقيقته دعم لهذه الميول الإنفصالية التي ينكرها العباسيون ويخوضون الحروب من أجلها، والمعتضد كان قبل الخلافة يقود الجيش العباسي ليقضي على خمارويه وأبيه، ويرد الطولونيون عن الشام.
هذا هو سر بقاء هذه المرحلة الأخيرة من حياة البحتري مجهولة كل الجهل، وهو أيضا سر خلو أكثر نسخ ديوان البحتري مما قاله في بني طولون ورجالهم، وإلى اليوم لا يزال هذا الشعر مخطوطا.
