البحث المراد طرحه هنا هو "الحكمة النظرية والحكمة العملية في نهج البلاغة".
والحكمة في استخلاص هذا البحث من منظار نهج البلاغة هو أن صاحب هذا النهج -علي بن أبي طالب- من الكمال في الحكمة النظرية وفي الحكمة العملية، فهو حكيم بكل ما لهذه الكلمة من معنى، وحكمته هذه ليست خارجة عن حدود الطاقة البشرية، بل في حدود ما يقوى عليه الإنسان السائر نحو الكمال، وقد بلغ أمير المؤمنين علي أرفع مستويات الحكمة.
أما الحكمة العملية فتعني بالموضوعات المرتبط وجودها وعدمه بالإنسان، فإذا وجد الإنسان وجدت وإذا انتفى انتفت هي الأخرى.
وبناء على هذا فإن الحكمة النظرية تبحث في المبدأ، والمعاد، والملائكة، والعالم المجرد، وعالم الملكوت، والمادة، والحركة التكاملية للمادة، وأمثال ذلك.
بناءً على ذلك فما يتناوله هذا الكتاب هو شرح للحكمة النظرية والحكمة العملية من منظار نهج البلاغة لسيد الموحدين علي بن أبي طالب، ويوضح معنى الحكمة النظرية والحكمة العملية، والفرق بينهما وبين العقل النظرية والعقل العملي، كما يبين سبب بحث الموضوع في إطار نهج البلاغة، ولمعرفة منزلة علي بن أبي طالب في إطار الحكمتين فهو يعتمد على أقواله التي قالها في تعريف نفسه، مضافاً إلى أقوال العرفاء والحكماء والعلماء الذين تقل آراءهم فيه.
