يدخل هذا الكتاب الفريد ضمن كتب المختارات الشعرية وهو من أعداد جنيد بن محمود بن محمد وهو يضم كماً من المختارات الشعرية التي انصبّت على معالجة فن شعري واحد هو: ال وصف سواء وصف الربيع أو الأشجار أو الأزهار أو الفواكه والثمار، وذلك وفق منهج علمي سنّه المؤلف لنفسه والتزم به في كل كتابه ورائده في هذا الباب كتابه "المشموم"، حيث عقد ثلاثة وثلاثين باباً للربيع والأزهار وبعض الثمار، خصّها فيه بثلاث وخمسين ومائتي مقطعة، ثم ألحق به باباً في العطور.
وهكذا فقد تأثر مصنف "الحدائق" بكتاب "المشموم" ونقل عنه كثيراً، إلا أن "حدائق الأنوار" تفردت بمختارات كثيرة جداً لا وجود لها في "المشموم". ويمكن من مقارنة عدد مقطعات "الحدائق" التي بلغت خمساً وثمانمائة مقطعة بما يقابلها في "المشموم"، إدراك الفرق الكبير بين الكتابين، بحيث يصحّ أن يقال إن كتاب "المشموم" هو غصن من أغصان شجرة "حدائق الأنوار"، إذ لم تبلغ مقطعات "المشموم" الثلث من مقطعات كتاب الحدائق. هذا من ناحية الكم.
ومن ناحية المنهج فإن كتاب الحدائق يمتاز على المشموم بدقة منهجه،إذ قسّم "جنيد" كتابه إلى ثلاثة أقسام، تفرّع كل قسم منها إلى عدد من الأبواب في تبويب علمي دقيق. في حين خلا كتاب المشموم من تقسيم ظواهر الطبيعة بباب مستقل. وقد تداخل فيه قسم الثمار مع قسم الأزهار، كما حصل لأبواب الليمون والنارنج واللونج التي تداخلت مع أبواب الأزهار في "المشموم".
وهكذا يمثل هذا الكتاب ظاهرة حضارية جديرة بالتأمل. فكثيراً ما اتهم الشعر العربي بإغفال مظاهر الطبيعة، فالظفر بديوان مختارات شعرية كُرٍّس كله للربيع والأزهار والثمار يعكس رقيّاً في الذوق والوجدان، وهو رقيّ جدير بالدراسة والتحليل وبالوقوف عنده طويلاً.
هذا عن منزلة الكتاب بين الكتاب المؤلفة في موضوعه، فأما الجديد الذي يقدمه فهو كثير وكثير. ذلك أنه يستدرك على دواوين عدد كبير من الشعراء من بينهم: 1-ابن المعتز، 2-أبي نواس، 3-ابن منير، 4-القاضي التنوخي، 5-أبي فراس، 6-الصنوبري، 7-البسامي، 8-الحاجري، 9-الخليع، 10-بديع الزمان، 1-ابن الساعاتي، وغيرها...
ثم هو يضيف أشعاراً جديدة إلى الشعراء لم تطبع دواوينهم لا نجدها في جميع مظان تراجمهم أمثال: الصرصري وابن سكرة والخبز رزي وغيرهم. كذلك فهو يضيف إلى معجم شعراء العربية أسماء جديدة أمثال: 1-الرسني، 2-ابن عبديل، 3-الرسني الرفاعي، 4-سعادة الحمصي، 5-الوصاف، 6-أبو العويص، 7-العجلي، وسواهم...
ثم هو يقدم مجموعة شعرية ضخمة منتقاة في وصف الربيع ومظاهره والأزهار والثمار عزّ نظيرها، تصلح مادة أساسية لدراسة تطور فن الوصف في الشعر العربي عبر العصور.
