مما لا شك فيه أن كل إنسان له ذنب أو ذنوب، يقع فيها الفينة بعد الفينة، كما قال صلى الله عليه وسلم: "ما من عبد إلا وله ذنب يعتاده الفينة بعد الفينة، أو ذنب هو مقيم عليه لا يفارقه حتى يفارق الدنيا...". فإن العبد بين ذنب ونعمة، لا يصلحهما إلا الحمد والاستغفار "ومن اتصف بهذه الصفة-أي الاستغفار-يسر الله عليه رزقه وسهل عليه أمره"... فالاستغفار يجلو القلوب ويصقلها، ويجعل الله به لعبده المستغفر من كل ضيق مخرجاً، ومن كل هم فرجاً، ويرزقه من حيث لا يحتسب.
"والاستغفار يخرج العبد من الفعل المكروه إلى العمل المحبوب، ومن العمل الناقص إلى العمل التام، ويرفع العبد من المقام الأدنى إلى الأعلى منه، والأكمل، فإن العابد لله، والعارف بالله، في كل يوم، بل في كل ساعة، بل في كل لحظة يزداد علماً بالله، وبصيرة في دينه وعبوديته بحيث يجد ذلك في طعامه، وشرابه، ونومه، ويقظته، وقوله، وفعله، ويرى تقصيره في حضور قلبه في المقامات العالية، وإعطائه حقها. فهو يحتاج إلى الاستغفار أناء الليل وأطراف النهار، بل هو مضطر إليه دائماً الأقوال والأحوال، في الغوائب والمشاهد لما فيه من المصالح وجلب الخيرات.
والاستغفار سبب من أسباب حسن الخاتمة فيه تختم الأعمال الصالحة وبه تختم الأعمار، وبه تختم المجالس، وبه يدفع البلاد، والاستغفار المخلوق بخالقه، ويحول بين العبد وبين الغفلة عن ربه، والاستغفار شور أكيد بالتقصير في حق الله تعالى وسبب من أسباب مغفرة الذنوب ومحوها، "فتوبى لمن وجد في صحيفته استغفاراً كثيراً". لأجل هذا وغيره كتبت هذه الرسالة النافعة التي تجمع مادة حسنة من نصوص الوحيين الشريفين كتاباً وسنة، فضلاً عن الشرح المستفيض وبياناً لذلك كله من كلام أئمة العلم والدين المعتبرين، كشيخ الإسلام ابن تيمية، وتلميذ الإمام ابن قيم الجوزية.
وبالعودة إلى فهرس هذه الرسالة نجد أنها جاءت محتوي على مقدمة وعشر فقرات تحت العناوين التالية: الاستغفار لغة وشرعاً، كيفية الاستغفار وصيغه، الأمر بالاستغفار، نماذج في الاستغفار الأنبياء السابقين ودعوتهم قومهم إليه، ثمار الاستغفار وفضله، الفرق بين التوبة والاستغفار، التوبة النصوح حقيقتها وشروطها، ومواطن الاستغفار، ثمار ترك الذنوب والمعاصي، تحذير الأخيار من الأحاديث الضعيفة والموضوعة في الاستغفار.
