يتناول الكتاب أهمية الحديث الشريف وفضله ومهمة الرسول عليه الصلاة والسلام في التبليغ والدعوة, وذكر آيات في طاعة الرسول وأشار الى ما قام به الصحابة رضي الله عنهم والتابعون من جهود عظيمة في خدمة هذا الدين, ثم ذكر طوائف الأمة من خدام القرآن وعلومه, ثم ذكر طبقات المحدثين, وسرد من كتاب العلل لابن المديني الرواة الذين عليهم مدار الأسانيد من عصر الزهري الى عصر ابن المديني. ثم ذكر طبقات أهل العلم بعد التابعين طبقة طبقة الى عصر الإمام أحمد, وطبقته مرتبين على البلدان. ثم ذكر أن علم هؤلاء من أهل الأمصار, وأئمة البلدان انتهى الى أهل المعرفة والصحيح وهم البخاري وغيره, كما ذكر مراتب الصحابة, والتابعين, وتبع الاتباع في العلم, والقضاء والقراءة.
الإمام ابن مندة: هو أبو عبد الله محمد بن اسحق بن محمد بن يحيى بن مندة, ولد سنة 310هجرية بأصبهان, نشأ وتربى في أسرة عريقة في الدين والعلم, أخذ العلم عن عدد كبير من علماء الإصبهانية, وقد اشتهر بكثرة رحلاته وأحاديثه عن شيوخه ومؤلفاته في مختلف العلوم والفنون
