الكتاب الذي نقلب صفحاته هو مختصر من كتب مهمة في وصف النباتات والأعشاب وفائدة كل منها والأدوية المستخرجة منها. ومن هذه الكتب كتاب الحكيم عبد الله بن البيطار المغربي المعروف بالعشّاب "الجامع لقوى الأدوية والأغذية"، ومن كتاب ابن جزلة "المنهاج" وكتاب الحكيم أبي الفضل حسن بن إبراهيم التغليسي وغيرها من الكتب المهمة في مجال الطب والأعشاب وقد عنى المصنف بعدم التطويل والإسهاب والاقتصار على النباتات الأعشاب الموجودة حيث كان يذكر اسم كل عشبة أو نبتة مع اسمها المتعارف عليها وأماكن زرعها وشكلها ولونها والأمراض التي تعالجها والدواء المستخرج منها. وقد رتب الكتاب على حروف المعجم، ليكون أقرب متناولاً، وأسهل قراءة.
أما مؤلف هذا الكتاب فهو يوسف بن عمر بن علي الرسولي (619-694هـ)، ذكره الخزرجي في كتابه العقود اللؤلؤية. وترجم له الدكتور حسين بن عبد الله العمري في الموسوعة اليمنية. وسيتخلص من تلك الترجمة، أن يوسف بن عمر بن علي الرسولي، هو الملك المظفر وثاني ملوك بني لرسول وأحوالهم حكماً. وقد كانت ولادته بمكة المكرمة وولي بعد مقتل أبيه في الجند سنة 647هـ، وقد واجه الكثير من الفتن، لكنه بفضل درايته ظل غلاباً...
ومن أهم ما في سيرته خلقه الرفيع، تتوجه خصال محمودة من الشجاعة والجود، وميل حثيث إلى العلم, فقد أظهر رغبة فائقة "بكتب الطب والفلك ومعرفة بعلم الحديث، فصنف في ذلك كتباً ورسائل، صنع منها "المعتمد في الأدوية المفردة" والذي هو هذا الكتاب الذي تحدثنا عنه آنفاً.
