مؤلف هذا المخطوط هو "المفضل الجعفي" صاحب الفرقة "المفضلية" وأحد تلامذة الإمام جعفر بن محمد الصادق النجباء الذي كان يحظى بالعناية والرعاية.
لقد نظر للكتاب بأنه يمثل آراء فرقة من "الباطنية"... والحقيقة: فهذا القول يؤيده ظهور هذه الفرقة على مسرح الأحداث الإسلامية بعهد الإمام الحادي عشر "الحسن العسكري" بقيادة "محمد بن نصير" و"محمد بن جنوب" و"الحسين بن حمدان الحضيبي" و"بتيار بن معز الدولة البويهي"، وأخيراً ظهورها ثانية بمظهرها القوي بقيادة "الأمير الحسن المكزون السنجاري".
وعندما نأخذ على عاتقنا استعراض ما جاء بالكتاب من آراء نقول: إنها نفحات باطنية، ونسائم صوفية، هبت رقيقة من عالم الروح، وجاءت تستقر في الأفكار المتكلفة الجزلى.
أجل... لقد نظر إليها نظرات فيها الكثير من الشك والريب’، والتجني، وما ذلك إلا لأن هذه الأفكار الباطنية فسرت على ظاهرها، فظل التأويل الباطني بعيداً عن الإفهام والإدراك... ومن هنا جاز لنا أن نكرر: "بأن صاحب البيت أدرى بالذي فيه".
