على الرغم من صعوبة الإحاطة بكلّ ما أنتج كمال الصليبي على مدى أكثر من نصف قرن من التعليم والبحث والكتابة. يحاول هذا الكتاب الإضاءة على بعض الجوانب المهمة من عطاء الصليبي، من خلال دراسات شارك في كتابتها أساتذة من مدارس ومشارب فكرية مختلفة، فتناول كل منهم أحد الحقول التاريخية التي كتب فيها الصليبي، من دون تنسيق مسبق لكيفية مقاربتهم أعماله، لكن على الرغم من تنوّعها، تُجمع هذه الدراسات على أمور ثلاثة: أوّلها ريادة الصليبي في دراساته التي تحث على إعادة التفكير في القضايا التاريخيّة وعدم القبول بالمسلّمات الموروثة، وهذا ما يظهر في الدراسات كلها الممتدّة من العهد القديم إلى التاريخ الحديث للأردن ولبنان؛ وثانيها هي شدّة اهتمام الصليبي بالجيوتاريخية، إذ ينطلق فهمه للتاريخ من معرفته العميقة بالجغرافيا وأثرها في المسار التاريخي للمناطق التي درسها، وينعكس هذا أيضًا جليًّا في بحوثه كلها التي تُغطي الفترة الممتدة من العهد القديم إلى الحديث؛ والإجماع الثالث هو أنّ معالجة الصليبي للتاريخ تستند إلى الفهم المعمَق للإطار والتاريخ المحليّين، وتفاعل المستوى المحلي مع المستوى المناطقي أو الإقليمي في الإطار الدولتي الواسع.
