في سنة 1912 قام فورستر بأول زيارة إلى الهند استمرت ستة أشهر وقد اوحت له هذه الزيارة بكتابة رواية "رحلة إلى الهند"، ففي الهند قام بزيارة صديق مسلم كان قد التقاه في إنكلترا، وصديق من كامبردج.
وقد استوحى شخصية الدكتور عزيز من ذاك الصديق المسلم، وفيما كان في الهند، سافر إلى مدينة بانكيبور في البنغال (رمز إليها بمدينة شاندرابور في الرواية)، وكهوف بارابار (ذكرت في الرواية بإسم كهوف مارابار).
امضى فورستر معظم وقته في الإسكندرية بمصر كضابط إستقصاء لدى منظمة الصليب الأحمر خلال الحرب العالمية الأولى، وفي سنة 1921، غادر إلى الهند ثانية كوزر خاص للمهراجا ديواس الأكبر، فأوحى له هذا المنصب بكتابة النصف الثاني من روايته الواقعية "رحلة إلى الهند".
كان فورستر رجلاً مخضرماً، فهو جزئياً كاتب ينتمي إلى العصر الفيكتوري المتأخر والعصر الإدواردي، وجزئياً كاتب حديث، لقد امتدت حياته على مدى سنوات كثيرة تميّزت بتغيّرات إجتماعية وثقافية سريعة، غير أن حساسيته المفرطة، وإنسانيته، ونظرته الجمالية إلى حوله، جعلت منه كاتباً نادراً ومتميزاً.
وقد منحته الملكة أليزابيث الثانية العضوية في رابطة رفاق الشرف The Order of Companions of Honor سنة 1953، وفي سنة 1969 (في عيد ميلاده التسعين) تلقى وسام الإستحقاق.
توفي فورستر في السابع من حزيران (يونيو) 1970 في كوفنتري، انكلترا، حيث أقام منذ العام 1946، وقد ترك في وصيته كل أمواله للكلية.
