تأتي أهمية هذه الدراسة التي تتعلق بدراسة سلوكيات وسياسات وجرائم ترتكب من خلال منصات وسائل التواصل الإجتماعي، تمس خصوصاً الحق في الخصوصية وحرية الرأي والتعبير وحماية البيانات الشخصية، وذلك في ضوء تنامي أعداد مستخدميها وتنامي دورها والخدمات التي تقدمها والإشكاليات القانونية التي تثيرها سواء أكان ذلك للمستخدمين أو منصات وسائل التواصل أو لأطراف أخرى.
وكذلك محاولة لإلقاء مزيدٍ من الضوء على التحقيق فيما تتناوله منصات وسائل التواصل الإجتماعي وإستخدام البيانات والمعلومات المنشورة لأغراض تحقيقية.
وتطرح منصات وسائل التواصل الإجتماعي تحديات كثيرة نظراً لتأثيرها الواضح على "الحرية الشخصية" للمستخدم، فهي من جهة وبلا شك قد أتاحت له مجالاً أوسع للتعبير عن رأيه والوصول إلى أوسع شريحة من الناس ودون أي كلفة أو بكلفة زهيدة جدّاً، إلا أنها بالمقابل أصبحت تعرضه أيضاً لمخاطر إنتهاك خصوصيته من خلال وصول الغير إلى ما ينشره، كما أنها قد ترتب عليه مسؤولية قانونية عما ينشره.
وتُطرح أيضاً إشكالية الصورة أو الهوية و"السمعة" التي يكوّنها الشخص من خلال إستعماله منصات وسائل التواصل الإجتماعي، فيمكن مثلاً معرفة ميول الشخص وأصدقائه وهواياته وثقافته ومستواه العلمي وآرائه من خلال صفحته على الفيسبوك أو تغريداته على تويتر.
