هذا الكتاب هو أول دراسة تجمع في دراسة الوهابية ما بين العام والخاص. العام تقديم جردة وافية بالردود التي وضعت في دحض الوهابية من طرف علماء السنة شرقاً وغرباً من خلال إجراء مسح شامل لمخطوطات مبعثرة في مكتبات عربية وأجنبية، والخاص يدقق في ما نشر ويحقق في ما لم ينشر من ردود علماء الغرب الإسلامي، تونس والمغرب تحديداً، على هذه الدعوة، وذلك لعدم مشاركة العلماء الجزائريين في هذا الجدل.
فما الذي دفع علماء الغرب الإسلامي، البعيد جغرافياً، إلى الإنخراط في حملة فقهية ضد حركة انحصر انتشارها وتأثيرها في شبه الجزيرة العربية وأطرافها، والشرق العربي عموماً؟ هذا ما يجيب عنه الكتاب بتقسيمه الأسباب إلى عملية وفقهية. العملية هي استيلاء الوهابيين على الأماكن المقدسة في الحجاز مما أثار حفيظة المسلمين لما أحدثه ذلك من تشويش على الحجاج وفرض تصور غير مألوف لتأدية المناسك، فضلاً عن هدم القبور والمزارات، والفقهية تتعلق بالخيار بين إتباع الدعوة أو الحرب على "المرتدين" أينما كانوا.
ينتسب هذا الكتاب إلى مجال تاريخ الأفكار والنظرية السياسية وعلم الاجتماع الديني. وهو من هذه الناحية دراسة شديدة الراهنية على ضوء بروز حركات إسلامية راديكالية، وسلفية جهادية، تحمل نفس الفكر الإقصائي -التكفيري المتشدد، ونفس السلوك الطهراني المتزمت الذي ميز الوهابية منذ نشوئها؟ هذا الفكر الذي يدين كل اجتهاد جديد بحجة محاربة البدع، ويدعو إلى تكفير المسلمين على الشبهة، وحيث أن ملف الحركات الإسلامية مفتوح اليوم على مصراعيه، فإن امتزاج السلفية بالجهاد شاهد على استمرار التأثير الوهابي في الحركات المتطرفة حتى بعد أفول نجم الوهابية، مما يستدعي النظر ملياً في عقائدها وآليات عملها وأسباب انتعاشها المتجدد.
