وقد تم بناء هذا البحث على مقدمة وثلاثة أقسام: القسم الأول: الشاعر، ويدور حول حياة الفضل، ويتناول اسمه، ونسبه، ولقبه، وكنيته وصفاته وأخلاقه، وصلاته بمعاصريه، ومشاركته في الحياة العامة، ووفاته، وشعره، أما القسم الثاني: شعره، وهو محاولة لجمع ديوانه من مظانه المختلفة، وتحقيقه، وتوثيقه وشرح غريبه، والتعريف بأعلامه، والقسم الثالث: الفهارس الفنية.
