التصوف هو الطابع الجوّاني للإسلام السني، ولأنه يأخذ نبعه من القرآن الكريم والسنّة النبوية، كان يُعرَّفُ في الغالب بأنه "علم الروحانيات" الذي يُمكّن المُريد، إذا ما برَعَ فيه، من تجاوز فردانيته وبلوغ مرتبة التعرف إلى الله تعالى والذهول فيه.
ينحو التصوف، أساساً إلى الغَرْف من بركة النبي محمد صلى الله عليه وسلم التي يأخذها المريد عن شيخه قرناً بعد قرنٍ، والتي تساعده في مقاومة الأهواء والأهوام التي تنغص عليه حياته.
يحاول إيريك جوفروا في هذا الكتاب إبراز كونية التصوف، ويرسم مسار تشكل "علوم الباطن" تلك، فــ "الطرق إلى الله كنفوس بني آدم"، كما أبرز كيفية تمكن كبار شيوخ المتصوفة من مواءمة عقائده وطرائقه في السلوك للتحولات المختلفة التي عرفها العالم الإسلامي.
وبيّن أن التصوف يمثّل اليوم ترياقاً حقيقياً لمختلف الأصوليات، ما يرشّحه لأداء دور متزايد في الغرب.
