يضع الكاتب مختار الغوث في دراسته عن "الحقيقة والخيال في الغزل العذري والغزل الصريح" لبنة هامة في بناء الأدب العربي وإعادة كتابته كتابة علمية، تفضي إلى نتائج، تعبرعن حقيقة تاريخية.
يبدأ الكتاب بعرض صورة موجزة للغزلين في آثار الدارسين بالتحليل والمقارنة في تناولهم لقضية الغزل وتأثرهم بالواقع الاجتماعي والثقافي السائد، متحدثاً عن المرأة المتحضرة والمرأة البادية في مسألة العفاف، ثم درس الكاتب شعراء الغزل الحضري وشعراء الغزل العذري شاعراً ليتبين علاقة رجال الحاضرة-عامة- بنسائها، وما شاع من علاقة بعض الشعراء بالنساء، تلا ذلك بحث في العشاق قبل العصر الأموي، غايته إتمام صورة الغزل في الأدب العربي قبل العصر العباسي، وذلك لأن قصص بعض من نسبوا إلى العشق في الجاهلية وصدر الإسلام تشبه قصص من نسبوا إليه في العصر الأموي. كما بين الكاتب تاريخ نشأة هذه القصص وحقيقتها وأن جلَها من صنع الوراقين في القرنين الثالث والرابع، وأن نسبته إلى ما ينسب إليه من قدامى الرواة لا تصح، وإنما هي صنع من بعدهم.
وأخيراً اعتبر الكاتب أن الحب العذري إنما هو ظاهرة في تاريخ الأدب العربي، وأقل من شبه ظاهرة في أخبار الأخباريين... وإنما هو حالات فردية قليلة جداً ظهرت في بقاع متباعدة من الجزيرة، كما تظهر في كل مكان من الأرض وكل زمان... وأن كتب الأخبار لا يصح الاعتماد عليها في كتابه تاريخ الحجاز الأدبي لأن نصيب الخيال فيها أكبر من نصيب الحقيقة...
