الإنسان لا يستطيع أن يختار بل يستطيع أن يتساءل. هل سيعود في يوم من الأيام؟ لعله اندفع عائداً إلى الماضي وسقط بين متوحشي العصر الحجري غير المصقول، في هاويات البحر الطباشيري. أو بين العظائيات البشعة والوحوش الزاحفة للعصور الجوراسية. قد يتجول الآن -إذا صح لي أن استعمل هذا التعبير- على صخور بحرية مرجانية أوليتيه مسكونة بديناصورات بلاصيرية، أو إلى جانب البحور الملحية الموحشة للعصر الترياسي. أم هل اتجه إلى الأمام، نحو أحد العصور الأقرب، حيث الإنسان ما زال إنساناً، العصر الذي أجيب فيه على ألغاز زماننا وحلّت فيه مشاكله المتعبة. إلى رجولة الجنس البشري، فأنا لا أستطيع أن أرى، من جهتي، أن هذه الأيام الأخيرة للتجربة الضعيفة والنظرية الجزئية والتنافر التبادلي هي حقاً أوج عصر الإنسان!
وهذا ما أقوله من جهتي أنا. إنه، كما أعرفه -فقد نوقشت المسألة بيننا قبل وقت طويل من صناعته آلة الزمن- لم ير سوى قتامة تقدم البشرية، رأى في كتلة المدنية النامية مجرد تكون أبله لا بد أن يرتد منقضاً ويدمر صانعيه في النهاية. إن كانت الحال كذلك، فلن يبقى أمامنا سوى أن نعيش كأن الحال لم تكن كذلك. لكن المستقبل، بالنسبة إليّ، لا يزال أسود وأبيض -جهل واسع تنيره ذكرى قصته في أماكن عرضية قليلة. ولدي، وهذا ما يريحني، زهرتان بيضاوان غريبتان -ذبلتا الآن، وأصبحتا بنيتي اللون ومنبسطتين وهشتين- لتشهدا، حتى حين يختفي العقل والقوة، بأن العرفان بالجميل والعطف المتبادل لا يزالان يعيشان في قلب الإنسان.
