أصول الفقه هو علم يبحث في الأدلة الإجمالية التي ينبني عليها العلم بالأحكام الشرعية العملية المكتسب من أدلتها التفصيلية. لذا فإن الإمام الشوكاني، مصنف هذا الكتاب كان يرى بأن طرق المتكلمين لا توصل إلى يقين، ولا يمكن أن تصيب الحق فيما هدفت إليه، لأن معظمها، كما يقول، قام على أصول ظنية، لا مستند لها إلا مجرد الدعوى على العقل والفرية على الفطرة. فكل فريق منهم قد جعل له أصولاً تخالف ما عليه الآخر. وقد أقام هذه الأصول على ما رآه عنده وهو صحيحاً، من حكم عقله الخاص. وقد كان للإمام الشوكاني في مسائل الإلهيات والصفات مذهبه الخاص الذي اعتنقه بعد طول بحث ومطالعة في كتب علم الكلام.
وأما مذهبه الفقهي. قد تفقه الشوكاني في أول حياته على مذهب الإمام زيد بن علي بن الحسين وبرع فيه، وفاق أهل زمانه، حتى خلع ربقة التقليد، وتحكى بمنصب الاجتهاد، وألف كتابه السيل الجرار المتدفق على حدائق الأزهار، فلم يقيد نفسه بمذهب الزيدية، بل صحح ما أداه إليه اجتهاده بالأدلة، وزيف ما لم يقم عليه دليل. وكان يقارع من يعارضه بالدليل من الكتاب والسنة. وهكذا اختار الشوكاني لنفسه مذهباً، لا يتقيد فيه برأي معين من آراء العلماء السابقين، بل حسب ما يؤدي إليه اجتهاده.
وفي هذا الإطار يأتي كتابه "إرشاد الفحول إلى تحقيق الحق من علم الأصول". وهو يقول بأنه لما كان علم الأصول يأوي إليه الأعلام والملجأ الذي يلجأ إليه عند تحرير المسائل، وتقرير الدلائل، في غالب الأحكام، وكانت مسائله المقررة، وقواعده المحررة، تؤخذ مسلمة عند كثير من الناظرين... فإن أحدهم إذا استشهد لما قاله بكلمة من كلام أهل الأصول، أذعن له المنازعون، وإن كانوا من الفحول، لاعتقادهم أن مسائل هذا الفن قواعد مؤسسة على الحق... وبهذه الوسيلة صار كثير من أهل العلم واقعاً في الرأي، وهو يظن بأنه لم يعمل بغير علم الرواية. وقد حمل ذلك الإمام الشوكاني على تصنيف كتابه هذا، في هذا العلم "علم الأصول" قاصداً به إيضاح راجحه من مرجوحه، وبيان سقيمه من صحيحه، موضحاً لما يصلح منه للرد عليه، وما لا يصلح للتعويل عليه، ليكون العالم على بصيرة في علم الأصول ورتبه على مقدمة، وسبعة مقاصد، وخاتمة.
