كتعريف بالمسرحية التي بين يديك يضع برناردشو العبارة التالية: كوميديا ضد الرومانسية، والرومانسية هنا هي رومانسية الحب والبطولة. فشخصية الفتاة راينا بايرونية التفكير والعواطف: تبدأ بالتفكير جدياً في الزواج من سيرجيوس سارانوف بعد أن سمعت من أمها قصة انتصاره الباهر حين اقتحم هذا الضابط خطوط مدفعية العدو بجرأة وشجاعة منقطعتي النظير. لكن، وحين يلجأ إلى غرفتها السوبسري المتطوع/المرتزق، هرباً من مصادريه البلغار، يزيل هذا الرجل العملي الرأسمالي، حيث نعرف فيما بعد أنه ابن صاحب فنادق ومراكز سياحية الخ، الغشاوة الرومانسية عن عيني هذه الفتاة العاطفية بذكر حقيقة بطولة خطيبها الذي تصمم على الزواج منه.
تتابع المشاهد ويكشف الحوار الذكي البارع في انسيابة مدى تفاهة هذا البطل الأجوف، فهو يقع في حب خادمة بدل أن يتمسك بحب الفتاة الغنية العاطفية والرومانسية. وتلعب الخادمة لوكا لدى أسرة الفتاة دوراً بارزاً في جز رجل البطل ليقع في حبائلها ويتزوجها، فهي تعرف كيف تقف أمام أسيادها كند لهم وتعرف كيف تناقش الأمور بحذق وذكاء (مما يذكرنا بأدوار الخادمات والخدم في مسرح موليير) بالرغم من صعوبة هضمنا لحوارها عالي الذكاء وكلامها المنطقي ونحن نقرأ أو نشاهد هذه المسرحية، إذ نحس كأننا نسمع برناردشو نفسه يتكلم وليست خادمة بسيطة وغير مثقفة في بلد متخلف حينذاك.
