مقتطفات من الكتاب: "حبي الأول لم يكن امرأة، بل ربما كان شوكة غابرة سدّدتْ ولهها إلى خاصرتي. ربما كان حبي الأول، وقبل أن أعرف تلك الفتاة بكثير، ذلك الدمّل الخبيث الذي حاصر الجانب الأيسر من أرنبة أنفي، أو لعله كان ذلك السلطعون الذي عضّني في إحدى خيران القرية في رحلة صيد سرطانات البحر بمعية رفقتي الصغار.
ربما كان حبي الأول تلك الغيبوبة التي داهمتني وأنا في العام الأول من ولادتي، والذي ألجأ خالتي لكي تعد لي كفناً، بينما كانت أمّي التي حلت بها كارثة وحاصرتها قيامة، تُصِرّ بشكل جنوني على انتزاعي من تلك الغيبوبة وهي تلجأ حيناً بشكل يائس إلى أعواد الثقاب لكي توقظني بإشعالها وغرسها في مفرق حاجبيّ، أو بدلق شيء من ماء الجرّة البارد على وجهي حيناً آخر.
