أليكسي مكسيموفيتش بيشكوف، ويعرف بمكسيم غوركي (28 مارس 1868 - 18 يونيو 1936)، أديب وناشط سياسي ماركسي روسي، مؤسس مدرسة الواقعية الاشتراكية التي تجسد النظرة الماركسية للأدب حيث يرى أن الأدب مبني على النشاط الاقتصادي في نشأته ونموه وتطوره، وأنه يؤثر في المجتمع بقوته الخاصة، لذلك ينبغي توظيفه في خدمة المجتمع.
ولد في نجني نوفجراد عام 1868، وأصبح يتيم الأب والأم وهو في التاسعة من عمره، فتولت جدته تربيته، وكان لهذه الجدة أسلوب قصصي ممتاز، مما صقل مواهبه القصصية.
وبعد وفاة جدته تأثر لذلك تأثرأ كبيراً مما جعله يحاول الانتحار.
تعنى كلمة جوركى باللغة الروسية "المر" وقد اختارها الكاتب لقبا مستعارا له من واقع المرارة التي كان يعانى منها الشعب الروسى تحت الحكم القيصرى والتي شاهدها بعينه خلال المسيرة الطويلة التي قطعها بحثا عن القوت ، وقد انعكس هذا الواقع المرير يشكل واضح على كتاباته وبشكل خاص في رائعته "الأم".
أهم أعماله: - رواية الأم.
- رواية الطفولة.
- مسرحية الحضيض.
- قصيدة "انشودة نذير العاصفة".
- الطفولة 1913-1914 - الأعداء؛دراما؛1906 - جامعاتي 1923 بالإضافة للعديد من المسرحيات والقصص والمقالات.

إننا لا نستطيع أن نتعرف تعرفاً مباشراً على الكاتب الذي نضطر إلى قراءته في غير لغته، بل كل ما يمكننا هو أن نستشف روحه من خلال الترجمة. هناك عناصر مثل الأشعة البنفسجية وغيرها لا نراها ولا ندرك كنهها، ولكنها تؤثر فيما حولها تأثيراً نستطيع أن نستشف منه طبيعة القوى التي أحدثتها. وهكذا الحال مع الأدب الذي نضطر إلى قراءته مترجماً. فهو يؤثر على المترجم تأثيرات تمكننا من التغلغل إلى أعماقه. وكلما حسنت الترجمة أعانتنا في هذا السبيل. وحتى أجود الترجمات لا تسمح لنا بغير هذه المعونة الاستشفافية. فلا تصلنا مباشرة بروح الأصل وجوهره. وغالباً ما يعود هذا على القارئ بالخسارة. غير أنَّ هذ لا يحدث دائماً. فمن ذا الذي يقدر أن يستشف تفاهة قصيدة "الغراب" لادجاريو من خلال ترجمة ملازمه الرائعة. فالقصيدة الإنجليزية "قطعة محفوظات"، ولكنها بالفرنسية سحر خلاب وروعة وقوة.
