شكلت السرديات الكبرى (العقل والعلم والتقدم والديمقراطية والثورة) عصر الحداثة، وكان عصراً يهتم بالهويات الكبرى الجامعة التي تحاول أن تنتج مجتمعاً فاضلاً (الهوية الليبرالية، الهوية الماركسية، الهوية القومية، الهوية الإسلامية)، لكن عصر الحداثة انتهى بالإخفاق، وفقدت السرديات الكبرى مصداقيتها بصرف النظر عن طريقة التوحيد التي تستخدمها، فقد أنتجت هويات كبرى لم تسمح بالتعددية والإختلاف، وكانت ذات طبيعة سلطوية وإقصائية، وخلقت هويات شمولية استطاعت أن تضبط المجتمع وهوياته الفرعية المختلفة، التي هي أشبه ببركان، بالقوة.
لكن عصر ما بعد الحداثة هو عصر إنهيار تلك الهويات الكبرى وإنفلاش الهويات الصغرى، حتى إن أي تجمع أهلي صغير أصبح يسعى لإكتساب هوية وكيان إجتماعي مستقل، وقد أصبحت الهويات الصغرى هويات فاعلة إجتماعياً في عصر ما بعد الحداثة الذي يدعم الإختلاف والتعددية الثقافية.
لقد عمدت الدولة العربية الحديثة والمعاصرة إلى تثبيت سلطتها وهويتها عبر اللعب بالهويات الفرعية، بحيث أصبحت كل منها تخاف من الهويات الفرعية الأخرى، كما تخاف بشكل أساسي من الهوية الرئيسية، مما جعل الدولة، من جهة أولى، تبدو وكأنها هي الحامية لتلك الهويات المختلفة، ولكنها من جهة أخى حولت المجتمع إلى ما يشبه البركان الخامد الذي يمكن أن ينفجر.
ذلك أن غياب الديمقراطية بأشكالها الإجتماعية والإقتصادية والسياسية، التي هي وحدها القادرة على تكوين هوية جامعة تضم كل الهويات المختلفة عبر عقد إجتماعي عادل يضمن المساواة بين تلك الهويات، ذلك الغياب أدى إلى إنكفاء الهويات المختلفة التي هي خارج فلك الهوية المسيطرة، على نفسها في مؤسسات أهلية دينية أو عرقية أو طائفية فاعلة لــ "ذاتها" إجتماعياً في المجتمع المدني.
