يهدف هذا الكتاب إلى توصيف وتحليل العمليات المحاسبية التي تقوم بها شركات صناعات النفط والغاز الطبيعي، انطلاقاً من عملية البحث والإستكشاف إلى مرحلة الحصول على النفط وتكريره وبيعه، وخاصة القواعد المحاسبية التي تتعلق بمعالجة النفقات الخاصة بمرحلة البحث عن الزيت الخام والغاز الطبيعي، بالإضافة إلى المشكلات المحاسبية المتعلقة بتقدير قيمة الإحتياطات النفطية وتقييمها وإظهارها في القوائم المالية للشركات البترولية.
ولهذا الغرض حاول المؤلفان جمع وتحليل الأدبيات المحاسبية العامة والخاصة بهذا النشاط لتطوير القواعد الخاصة بالعمليات المحاسبية التي تطبق على عمليات هذه الصناعة، وذلك انطلاقاً من التشابه في ظروف هذه الصناعة في أغلب الدول المنتجة للنفط. لهذا جاءت المعالجة المحاسبية لعمليات الصناعة النفطية في هذا الكتاب عامة لا تخص بيئة محددة مع الإشارة لبعض التشريعات التي تؤثر على خصوصية النشاط المحاسبي في بعض الدول المنتجة للغاز والنفط.
