ولأهمية هذه الخطب والرسائل، عمل الدكتور حسين عطوان على جمعها وشرحها وتوثيقها، حيث قوّم ما أعوّج من ألفاظ بعض الخطب، والرسائل وتراكيبها، وشرح الألفاظ الغريبة والتراكيب الصعبة، معتمداً على كتب المعاجم والأمثال والتفسير، كما صنع الدكتور عطوان الكتاب ثلاثة فهارس: أولها للأعلام والقبائل وأهل الأمصار والفرق، وثانيها للمصادر والمراجع، وثالثها للمحتويات.
