لم يزد مكيافلي في الواقع عن أنه عبّر في كتبه، ولا سيما في "الأمير" و"المطارحات"، عن واقعية عصره ونزعته في السياسة والأخلاق، وقد استغلّ مواهبه الأدبية والسياسية في التعبير عن شيء كان سائداً في زمنه، ولقد كان جريئاً في الخروج على الآداب المثلى التي كانت تشغل عقول أنصار النزعة الإنسانية.
ولعل أهم نقد وجّه إلى مكيافلي هو أنه أقام آراءه على سوء الظن بالطبيعة الإنسانية، والمذهب الذي يقوم على ناحية واحدة من الطبيعة الإنسانية عرضة للخطإ، تماماً مثل مذهب جان جاك روسو السياسي الذي أقامه على حسن الظن بالطبيعة الإنسانية، والحقائق أكثر تعقيداً وطبيعة البشر تتضمن الخير والشر.
إنّ ما عاينه مكيافلي وما لحظه كان صادقاً كل الصدق عن عصر كالعصر الذي عاش فيه، وتقدير مكيافلي وتقويم "مطارحاته" يستلزم بإستمرار أن يُنظر إليه في إطار عصره.
وإننا نعتقد، على أي حال، أن الأثر الذي خلّفه كتاب "الأمير" في نفوس الشخصيات، التي يطلق عليها الفرنسيون اسم "شخصيات مكيافلية"، هو حافز على نشر مطارحاته، ذلك لأن هذه المطارحات هي ترياق معاكس للأمير إلى حد كبير، فقد ظهر فيها مكيافلي إنساناً وطنياً يكره الطغاة، ويعمل في سبيل الخير العام.
ولهذا فمن المؤسف، كل الأسف حقاً، أن يكون كتاب مثل كتاب "الأمير" من أكثر الكتب التي تُقرأ في هذه البلاد، وأن يكون أحد الكتب المقرَّرة التي يجب أن يطالعها طلاب عصر النهضة في جامعة أوكسفورد، بينما يكون كتاب مهم وكثير الشمولية، مثل كتابه هذا "المطارحات"، غير معروف هنا بين سياسيينا ومشرِّعينا، بل ومجهولاً منهم أيضاً.
